North Korea has confirmed it has successfully tested a new type of ballistic missile that can be launched from a submarine.
It is the first test from a submarine by Pyongyang in almost three years.
The missile was fired into the sea towards Japan.
The launch came hours after North Korea said it would resume denuclearisation talks with the US on Saturday.
Al Jazeera speaks to Mason Richey, a professor of international relations at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
He says the missile launch is unlikely to harm talks with the US.
