The most popular K-pop group in the world, BTS, is back from their summer hiatus, and fans couldn’t be happier. The boy band has become an international sensation, winning dedicated fans the world over, and even bigger things are ahead for them in the future.

While many boy bands or musical groups constantly battle reports of drama and fighting within the band, no negativity plagues BTS, and the seven members are remarkably close.

Still, there is one specific thing that could cause the group to split up – and fans likely wouldn’t even see it coming.

How did BTS become famous?

BTS formed in Seoul in 2013 and spent several years perfecting their craft, learning the intricacies of dancing, singing, choreography, and style. By the time 2015 arrived, BTS had perfected both their look and their sound, and fans all over South Korea couldn’t get enough of them.

They grew so popular, in fact, that they started achieving international success, becoming the first K-Pop band to really make it big in the United States.

BTS’ signature is their thoughtful, insightful lyrics, which deal a lot with teenage culture and the different pressures that society places on young people. Their fans, known as the BTS “Army” are actively encouraged to be kind to each other, creating a culture of inclusion and positivity that is rare in many music fan clubs.

BTS’ world tours have become legendary, and they were honored with four Billboard Music Awards, 2 MTV Video Music Awards, and a host of other honors and recognitions.

What could cause BTS to break up?

In the late summer, the band took some time off in order to unwind and enjoy life. Although the group was on hiatus, they stayed active on social media, regularly interacting with their fans and sharing details about their summer activities.

The band, which is made up of members Jimin, J-Hope, Suga, V, Jungkook, Jin, and RM, is undoubtedly very close. They have spent years of their life together, working in very close quarters. Moreover, they experienced great success as a group, which surely bonded them even further.

Still, there’s one thing that could, potentially, break up BTS. In South Korea, young men between the age of 18 to 28 are required to serve in the military for a minimum of 21 months.

All of the members of BTS fall in that age range, so it’s very likely that at some point, over the next several years, one or more of BTS’ members will be pulled away from the band and conscripted into military service.

The band will do what it takes to stay together

BTS has actually addressed this issue in the past, and they don’t seem that concerned over it. In an interview in early 2019, Jin stated that it’s “natural” as a South Korean, and that when duty calls, all of the band members will definitely be ready to “do their best.”

However, whenever the various members of the group do get conscripted to serve, it’s won’t be the end of the world, or the end of the group. It seems likely that BTS’ label, Big Hit Entertainment, will just make do with one or fewer members, and still keep the band together.

They could even stagger their military service so that one serves in the military, then rejoins the band, then another serves his time, and so on.

One thing’s for sure — BTS’ fanbase is definitely loyal enough to hang on and wait for their favorite K-Pop group to be reunited for good. Stay tuned to Showbiz Cheat Sheet for all the latest BTS news!
