State Department inspector general to meet lawmakers on Capitol Hill

On Wednesday, the State Department's inspector general, Steve Linick, is expected to brief congressional staff from several House and Senate committees on their requests for documents on Ukraine, according to the Associated Press. Some outlets, including CNN, reported Linick requested an "urgent briefing,"  but it's not clear what he will present. The development comes less than a day after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pushed to delay five State Department officials' congressional testimony and accused Democrats of trying to "intimidate" and "bully" career professionals in their quest to impeach President Donald Trump. A trio of Democratic chairman wrote in a letter to Assistant Secretary of State John Sullivan on Tuesday night that Pompeo may be involved in a "blatant cover-up and a clear abuse of power" as it has been reported Pompeo listened in to the July 25 call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in which Trump lobbied the leader to probe 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

A year after Khashoggi's killing, Saudi crackdown continues

One year ago Wednesday, journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a U.S. resident and prominent critic of Saudi Arabia, disappeared inside the country's diplomatic offices in Turkey. His remains have yet to be found. A United Nations report concluded that there was "credible evidence" that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman masterminded his murder. Turkish prosecutors, citing audio and other evidence, said Khashoggi was injected with a sedative, strangled, then dismembered. A year after Khashoghi's death, the Trump administration still maintains a close relationship with the Saudi regime despite an international outcry and objections from some U.S. lawmakers. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has escalated its use of arbitrary arrests and convictions of dissidents and activists, according to humanitarian groups such as Human Rights Watch.
