At this rate, the Jets may need to hold cornerback tryouts.

Two days ago, they placed free-agent bust Trumaine Johnson on injured reserve with a pair of injured ankles and now the other starter, Darryl Roberts, suffered a non-contact calf injury and may be out awhile, too. Roberts’ status for Sunday’s game against the Giants is in doubt.

“I’m not really sure if he’ll be available for the game,” coach Adam Gase said on Thursday before practice. “I just know those are tough ones to come back from that fast.”

Slot corner Brian Poole, Arthur Maulet and Maurice Canady, claimed off waivers from the Ravens on Wednesday, are candidates to replace Roberts. Nate Hairston has been starting in place of Johnson. Asked if Canady has had enough time to get ready to play, Gase said: “We’ll find out.” He also said the Jets may add another cornerback.

Blessuan Austin, the team’s sixth-round draft pick from Rutgers, could also be activated or lost to season-ending IR. He began practicing three weeks ago after being out with a torn ACL.

“We need anybody who knows the defense,” Gase said.

The Jets are already down several of their top middle linebackers. Now their cornerback situation is just as much of a mess.

Tight end Chris Herndon was expected to practice fully on Wednesday, but was limited. He will be limited again on Thursday, but Gase believes Herndon is headed in the right direction.

“He looked good (Wednesday), he looked different to me. He looked way more confident, way more confident running,” Gase said. “We saw burst, saw a little bit more of what we saw in training camp. Like the way he was before last week, he was holding back.”

Running back Le’Veon Bell (knee/ankle) is expected to be limited at practice and is progressing to playing against the Giants. … Safety Rontez Miles (neck/hip) was placed on IR.
