The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating a deadly salmonella outbreak linked to ground beef.

At least 10 people have been infected after consuming ground beef, including two cases in Kansas. Eight of those people were hospitalized and one person has died. The people affected by it were in California, Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, Oklahoma and Texas.

Illnesses were reported from Aug. 8 to Sept. 22. “Illnesses might not yet be reported due to the time it takes between when someone becomes ill and when the illness is reported,” the CDC writes in a report online. “This takes an average of 2 to 4 weeks.”

The CDC has not identified a single source of the salmonella contamination, but it encourages people to cook ground beef thoroughly.
