EL PASO, Texas - The reopening of a Texas Walmart closed after the violence of the Aug. 3 mass shooting has been pushed back, but the store has revealed its vision for a memorial that will be open to the public.

The Walmart will open at 9 a.m. Nov. 14, shortly after store associates have a small meeting inside the store.

Todd Peterson, vice president of Walmart and regional general manager, said it won't be a celebratory event, but will be one that unveils the renovation and external work done on the store.

Peterson made the announcement and revealed the plans during Tuesday's City Council meeting.

Walmart also plans a memorial it calls "The Grand Candela," which will emit a beam of light at the southern side of the property. It'll be surrounded by decorative metal fencing to commemorate the events of Aug. 3.

The attack resulted in the death of 22; 25 were injured during the shooting.

Plans for the memorial are to emulate candles. They'll be built out of 22 individual perforated aluminum arcs grouped into one, single 30-foot candela that "will stand as a tribute to each of the lives lost on August 3 and a testament to the light of hope that radiates from the El Paso community,” Walmart vice president and regional general manager Todd Peterson said in a news release.

“We are grateful to be part of such an incredible community that when faced with tragedy has responded with unity, compassion and love,” Peterson said at the council meeting.

Work on the 30-foot structure will take four to six weeks to complete, according to Walmart officials. Construction on the foundation for the memorial has already begun. It will be the anchor of a plaza on the southern side of the store's parking lot and will be enclosed by metal fencing and include landscaping of native and adaptive plants.
