Kyrie Irving scored 50 points on Wednesday, setting an NBA record for a player making his debut for a new team.
Unfortunately for the Brooklyn Nets, they needed 52 from their new point guard.
Irving’s last-second off-balance shot in overtime fell short as the Minnesota Timberwolves won a thriller in Brooklyn, 127-126.
Irving finished the night with 50 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, but will have to wait to log his first victory in his new black uniform.
Monster night from Towns
Karl-Anthony Towns paced the Timberwolves with 36 points, 14 rebounds, three steals and three blocks while hitting seven 3-pointers as Minnesota rallied from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime and secure the win.
Andrew Wiggins logged 21 points and eight rebounds as six Minnesota players scored in double figures.
Irving stumbles on game-winning effort
Irving had a chance to win the game and set up an isolation play in the game’s final seconds. He fell to the ground as he attempted a spin move against Josh Okogie, but regained his balance and maintained possession of the ball.
He regathered near the free throw line in time to launch a desperate heave toward the bucket that bounced off the rim as time expired.
Irving’s 50-point effort breaks Kiki VanDeWeghe's mark for a player making his debut with a new team. VandDeWeghe scored 47 points in his debut with the Portland Trail Blazers in 1984.
