It seems that winning huge accolades in your career doesn’t save you from being in the middle of controversies. Carlos Yulo became a hero in the Philippines after becoming only the second athlete to win the gold medal for the nation at the Paris Olympics. But as the novelty of his victory slowly wears off, his family problems involving his estranged mother have become a matter of huge public scrutiny.

Many have started passing judgment on the matter, blaming Carlos’ girlfriend, Chloe San Jose, for the whole thing. This, according to her, might be caused by her confident display as an influencer. It doesn’t end there, as apparently, her attitude seems to be a defense mechanism stemming from deep childhood traumas involving her family.

Talking to Toni Gonzaga studio, Carlos Yulo’s girlfriend Chloe San Jose opened up about harsher times during her childhood. She was born in the Philippines and raised in Australia. The influencer remarked that her life became tough during two phases. Once when she was 11 and the other time when she was 18.

Chloe had moved to Australia with her parents at the age of eleven. However, the adjustment to the new environment was not the tough part. She said that she experienced domestic violence. Not only did she witness it happening to other family members, she was also a victim of it. It got to a point where she wanted to run away. “When I was sixteen, I really wanted to leave. But since I was a minor, I couldn’t. So, I waited for two years, until I was eighteen, so that I could leave.” She then moved in with her best friend, whose family took her in.

Carlos Yulo’s girlfriend described the whole experience as harrowing and said that the violence was both verbal and physical. But, looking back, the whole incident made her a much braver person. Chloe San Jose also felt that maybe this was why her behavior was always misinterpreted. She said, “Maybe that’s why my courage was misunderstood. Because they don’t know what happened in my early childhood.” Her bravery has garnered a lot of controversy, as people have misconstrued her role in breaking Carlos Yulo’s family.

Carlos Yulo’s family controversy, which has caused a lot of stir

Is Chloe San Jose's bravery a beacon of strength, or a misunderstood trait causing unnecessary drama?

Carlos Yulo seems to have a rocky family life. The issues can be dated back to last year, when the gymnast’s mother seemed to have a problem with his girlfriend, Chloe San Jose staying with him in Japan. His mother believed that she was acting as a distraction. It also seemed that his then-coach of seven years, Munehiro Kugimiya, seemed to agree.

However, Carlos took his girlfriend’s side, leading him to part ways with Kugimiya and reunite with previous coach Aldrin Castaneda. It was also only the start of his heavily difficult relationship with his own mother, Angelica Yulo. Angelica had been handling Carlos Yulo’s finances for quite a long time. But, after a very successful Olympics campaign, Carlos went on TikTok to accuse his mother of embezzling funds from his bank account. Not only did she withdraw money from his account without informing him, he was also kept in the dark regarding payments from previous competitions.

Angelica responded with a lawyer, calling her son’s allegations false. According to her, she had transferred money from her son’s account to hers to protect it. While Carlos Yulo has publicly forgiven her, the drama still seems to continue in their home country. It remains to be seen what outcome comes out of this whole thing.
