Top seed Diana Shnaider was extended to three sets in winning her first career match against Hungary's Fanny Stollar 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in first-round action Tuesday at the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest.

Russia's Shnaider, ranked 28th in the world, was 6 of 9 on break-point conversions, to 5 of 8 for Stollar.

Third-seeded Xiyu Wang of China won a battle with Romania's Anca Todoni 7-6 (4), 7-5.

Other seeded players didn't fare as well. Seventh-seeded Moyuka Uchijima of Japan lost the first set 6-1, then retired down 1-0 in the second set to Germany's Ella Seidel. Germany's Eva Lys knocked off sixth-seeded Nadia Podoroska of Argentina 6-3, 6-0.

Other winners included Bernarda Pera, Hungary's Anna Bondar, Slovakia's Rebecca Sramkova and Russia's Ekaterina Makarova.


Palermo Ladies Open

Argentina's Maria Lourdes Carle lost the first set, then dominated eight-seeded Tatjana Maria 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round in Italy.

Ranked 93rd in the world, Carle converted 7 of 13 (53.8 percent) of her break-point opportunities, to 3 of 7 (42.9 percent) for Maria.

Fourth-seeded Diane Parry of France rebounded to defeat Australia's Olivia Gadecki 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Fifth-seeded Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands also needed three sets to oust Italy's Martina Trevisan 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2.

France's Chloe Paquet defeated China's Saisai Zheng 6-3, 6-3. Australian Ajla Tomljanovic rallied past Egypt's Mayar Sherif 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, and Croatia's Petra Martic swept Colombia's Emiliana Arango 6-2, 6-3.
