Minecraft is a game rooted in customization, as you have the ability to change just about everything in the world to your liking. However, if you're looking to change up your character itself, there are a few more hoops to jump through than just placing blocks. For those of you looking to swap out your Minecraft username, you've come to the right spot, as all the steps to do so are showcased below.

How to change your Minecraft username

For starters, there are a few different ways to change a username in Minecraft and the way you'll use depends on the platform you're on. For example, those playing Bedrock Edition on PlayStation, Switch, or Xbox have to change their system gamertag, which changes your username for all games, not just Minecraft.

You can change your console gamertag through the settings of your system. Some platforms only allow gamertag changes a certain number of times for free, though, so it might cost you some cash to change it. It's also worth noting that your gamertag has to be unique, so you can't pick one that's already in use by another player.

Now, if you're someone with a Microsoft account on Java Edition, then you're able to change your Minecraft username with a few simple clicks. You can see the steps to change your username below:

  • Go to the official Minecraft website
  • Log in to your Microsoft account in the top-right corner (there are no longer any Mojang accounts, as they've all been migrated to Microsoft)
  • Once you've logged in, click the "Account" button in the top-right corner and select "Profile"
  • This directs you to the "My Games" tab, where you'll see a box for Minecraft: Java Edition in the middle of the screen
  • Underneath the image for Java Edition, you'll see "Profile Name" highlighted, which you need to click
  • Here, you can freely change your Minecraft username and save it
  • You're only allowed to change your username once every 30 days, though, so make the change count
The Profile Name option allows you to change your username.

And that's all there is to changing your username in Minecraft. After you've made the changes, your username will reflect the new name you typed in for you and any other players on your world or server. If you made a mistake with your name or want to change it again, you'll have to wait the required 30 days before making another username switch.
