Nintendo's copyright lawyers are getting busy again, this time taking aim at decades worth of Nintendo-related content for Garry's Mod. The developers have said they're taking items down, but have requested players help by "deleting [their] Nintendo-related uploads and never uploading them again."
As a popular open-ended PC sandbox, Garry's Mod has a ton of user-created content available through Steam Workshop, with popular game modes like Prop Hunt having their origins in Garry's Mod add-ons. The game has also amassed a lot of mods that riff on Nintendo's franchises, and after 20 years, Nintendo is asking the Garry's Mod developer to remove all of it.
As reported by Wario64 on X (formerly Twitter), developer Facepunch Studios announced in a Steam update that it would be removing all Nintendo-related items from the Workshop in response to takedowns sent by Nintendo itself.
"Honestly, this is fair enough. This is Nintendo's content and what they allow and don't allow is up to them," the update reads. "They don't want you playing with that stuff in Garry's Mod--that's their decision; we have to respect that and take down as much as we can."
At the time of writing, it's still easy to find plenty of Nintendo-related uploads on the Garry's Mod Steam Workshop. A search for "Nintendo" brings up over 1,200 entries, "Zelda" has almost 800, and "Mario" has over 5,500 hits. The mods range from cosmetic items and player skins, to full game maps and minigames recreated in Garry's Mod.
"If you want to help us by deleting your Nintendo related uploads and never uploading them again, that would help us a lot," the update finishes, adding that there's a lot to go through after 20 years of uploads.
