Authorities asked for tips from the public after a 16-year-old student was wounded by gunfire and ran for help inside a Brick high school, prompting a lockdown and major police response Tuesday.

Police converged on Brick Memorial High School in response to a report from a crossing guard of shots fired near the building shortly before 2 p.m., according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officers found the injured teen, a student, bleeding from his arm in the school’s gym, according to authorities. The boy was rushed to an area hospital and was recovering from a graze wound to his shoulder.

Investigators said the shooting happened about a quarter mile from Brick Memorial High School on Lanes Mill Road, but the attack led officials to issue a lockdown at town schools and conduct a precautionary sweep of the high school building.

“It’s important for everyone to know this was not a school shooting. The response from law enforcement was swift and professional during a time of great concern,” Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said in a statement. “Detectives from my office, Brick PD and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office will be interviewing witnesses and following leads well into the night.”

The shooting Tuesday was the second in three days in the same section of town. Police said an 18-year-old man was shot in the leg in a drive-by shooting Saturday night at the Briar Mills condominium development.

Brick Police Chief James Riccio said detectives would investigate any possible link between the cases.

“We are currently investigating all leads and whether or not this incident is related to Saturday’s incident,” Riccio said.

“I’d like to commend the students, teachers and administration from all of the schools involved,” the chief said of the response Tuesday.

“We hope to resolve this case soon.” the chief told reporters at a briefing shortly after the shooting. “This might be an isolated incident between these parties."

A Brick schools representative could not be immediately reached to comment.
