Airbnb banned the practice of renting to revelers Saturday, following a shooting at a Halloween party held in a home rented through the site.
“Starting today, we are banning ‘party houses,’ and we are redoubling our efforts to combat unauthorized parties and get rid of abusive host and guest conduct, including conduct that leads to the terrible events we saw in Orinda,” co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky tweeted Saturday.
The announcement follows the deaths of five people in a shooting at a rented house in Orinda, California,, near Oakland.
The renter reportedly lied to the homeowner about their intent, claiming they needed the space as a fresh-air refuge from the California wildfire for their asthmatic family members.
Instead, the party was advertised on social media, attracting more than 100 guests.
Chesky said the company will create “a dedicated ‘party house’ rapid response team” to handle future situations.
