Ellen Pompeo is an actress best known for playing Dr. Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy since 2005. Mike Pompeo is the U.S. Secretary of State under President Donald Trump. Unfortunately, a criticism aimed at the latter Pompeo was sent by mistake to the former — and the TV star is setting the record straight.
On Sunday, Tommy Vietor — co-host of the political podcast Pod Save America and a former spokesman for President Barack Obama — tweeted a New York Times article about the fallout from the drone strike killing of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, adding this scathing comment seemingly intended for Sec. Pompeo: “Great work, @EllenPompeo!”
Vietor quickly caught his mistake and apologized to the actress and clarified that his “beef is with @SecPompeo.”
“I am melting down about Iran and Sunday shows and attacking half of Shondaland,” he joked. “I need to log off.”
“Ellen has close ties to Muqtada al-Sadr that warrant further scrutiny,” he later added.
Pompeo (the actress) was understandably confused when she emerged from a hot yoga class to find herself on the receiving end of a foreign policy lecture.
What in the actual actual is happening people? LOL... I missed something clearly...mistaken identity? Am I getting confused with maniacs? Although I’m sure there are people out there who do think I’m a maniac

She went on to make it clear that she and Sec. Pompeo have nothing in common apart from their last name. Pompeo referred to the White House official as “one of the maniacs that work for our maniac in chief,” a jab at the president.
“I’m much better-looking and smarter than any of those [people],” she added.
I don’t know I just checked my phone it seems I got confused with one of the maniacs that work for our maniac in chief? Which is disappointing because I’m much better looking and smarter than any of those ...putting the mic out to the audience to sing along. https://t.co/B1NI8fCz71

The mix-up has already inspired some memes, and even calls for Pompeo to replace, erm, Pompeo. George Conway, husband to White House adviser Kellyanne Conway, joked that the Ellen-Pompeo-takes-D.C. premise would be called “Grey’s Lobotomy.”
Amid tweets demanding an Ellen Pompeo presidential run, the actress took a moment to note that the risk facing U.S. troops being deployed to the Middle East is “no joke.”
Obviously this is all in fun but our troops are the only thing that matters to me.....them being in danger is no joke....we owe them everything for their sacrifice and glad they are coming home and sending them all love and gratitude....❤️
