While currently the world’s premiere fighter aircraft, the F-22 is basic where it counts- and that means something in a future potentially littered with near-peer threats and the possibility of austere logistical conditions.

Despite being a feat of technology and engineering, the F-22 Raptor’s powerhouse is surprisingly simple, and requires only a handful of tools- the kind you’d find at any hardware store.

The breathtakingly robust Pratt & Whitney F-119 engine is the kind of engine you think of when you imagine raw thrust getting you past the speed of sound in no time at all. Designed with simplicity in mind, the powerplant is a mechanic’s dream, and was even used on the X-35 and X-32 prototypes.

Thanks to a simple design, the F-22 is a keeper- and it has to be. The US currently can’t make any more, due to the fact that the production line shortsightedly shut down long ago.

According to Business Insider, the F-22 does spend a lot of time in maintenance due to its radar-absorbing ceramic coating.
