The Brooklyn Nets played the Los Angeles Lakers in a pre-season game in Shanghai on October 10, but only the fans in attendance were able to see it. Chinese state TV and the popular streaming service Tencent refused to show the game, after a tweet by Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey in support of Hong Kong protesters angered the Chinese government and many Chinese fans. Promotional events featuring the teams were cancelled at the last minute and posters for the game which had been put up across Shanghai were taken down.
