It’s generally a bad idea to bite the hand that feeds you. That’s why it’s so shocking to hear cast member of The Mandalorian went off on the controversial new Star Wars film The Rise of Skywalker. Here’s what he had to say.
Jake Cannavale doesn’t hold back
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Last Jedi was the most polarizing movie in the Star Wars saga, if not the most polarizing Hollywood film ever. The Rise of Skywalker had one job – to unite a divided fandom. Instead, it disappointed many fans.
Those fans include an actor from the Star Wars Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Jake Cannavale had a minor role in the series. Though his acting got a positive reception, it’s uncertain Disney will want to hire him again after he criticized one of their movies so strongly.
According to Cinema Blend, Cannavale posted to Instagram “I’m in the Star Wars universe now!!! So surely I can’t speak ill of Episode IX, right??? Wrong.”
He continued “There were more plot holes than there was plot. The amount of ‘by the ways’ was absolutely infuriating. Rise of Skywalker (btw dumba** title) was worse than Phantom Menace AND Last Jedi combined. Fight me.”
Is ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ worse than ‘The Phantom Menace’?
That last comment serves as particularly potent criticism for a Star Wars fan. For many years, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace was widely considered the nadir of the franchise. Recently, many fans of the series began to reconsider The Phantom Menace, feeling it was not nearly as insulting as The Last Jedi.
Cannavale is only upset at the new film because he enjoyed the older ones so much. He added “Personally, I’ve been a huge Star Wars fan since I was a kid. And I felt pretty let down by the overall laziness of this new trilogy.”
He was “also a bit angry at the entitlement of it for pretty much seizing control of the franchise as a whole by basically [saying], ‘Nah we don’t like the ending that everybody’s been cool with for decades, let’s change it!’ I personally would feel pretty depressed if I was in the new Star Wars movie (as a main character I mean. If I was a dude wearing an alien puppet or whatever I’d be fucking stoked…but still.)”
Is ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ the success Disney wanted?
Although The Rise of Skywalker has upset both fans and critics, that hasn’t impeded its commercial success. MSN reports the film is projected to make $195 million at its opening weekend. This is bigger than the openings of two other long-awaited Disney projects: Avengers: Age of Ultron and the 2017 version of The Lion King. Both of those earlier films earned $191 million in their first weekend.
Apparently, many people feel the need to see the Skywalker saga conclude despite the poor reviews the film has received. At the same time, some Star Wars fans are weary of critics because they largely enjoyed The Last Jedi. The Rise of Skywalker is upsetting lots of people. It’s still a tremendous financial success. As Darth Vader proved, you don’t have to be good to take over the galaxy.
