INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Hospitals in Marion County will begin restricting visitors this week due to elevated flu activity.
The temporary restrictions, which begin Friday, December 20, were requested by Marion County Public Health Department Director Virginia A. Caine, M.D. The goal of the restrictions is to protect patients and staff when influenza activity is at an increased level in Marion County.
The temporary restrictions include no visitors with flu symptoms, no visitors under the age of 18 and visits are limited to immediate family members, as identified by the patient.
If you're visiting a patient at a Marion County healthcare facility, the health department recommends checking the facility's website or call ahead to check on restrictions and any exceptions.
Influenza can cause fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and fatigue. Severe complications from the infection includes pneumonia, which can lead to hospitalization and death.
“The most effective way to protect against the flu is to get a dose of seasonal flu vaccine. It’s not too late,” Caine said. “Other recommendations to lower the risk of spreading flu include covering your cough and washing hands frequently and thoroughly.”
Those at greatest risk for complications from influenza include children under the age of 2 and adults over 65, individuals who have compromised immune systems, those with chronic pulmonary, cardiovascular, renal, hepatic, hematological, and metabolic disorders, obese individuals and women who are pregnant or during the first two weeks after giving birth.
The health department urges those who suspect they are infected with influenza to stay home from work or school and to see their doctor.
