Colby Covington suffered a broken jaw in his fifth-round TKO loss to Kamaru Usman this past weekend at UFC 245, and it may keep him sidelined for the next six months.
On Monday, the Nevada State Athletic Commission released the medical suspensions for the card with Covington looking at a potentially lengthy suspension due to the injuries he suffered in the fight with Usman.
Covington must have his “nondisplaced midline mandibular fracture” cleared by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or he’ll be out of action until June 12, 2020. Regardless of the broken jaw, Covington will be suspended until at least Feb. 13, 2020 with no contact until Jan. 29, 2020.
Covington likely suffered the injury in the third round when a replay showed a pair of punches connecting on the former interim champion that snapped his head around on a swivel. After returning to his corner, Covington told his coaches that he felt like he broke his jaw during the round.
After the event was finished, Covington was taken to a Las Vegas hospital for treatment and the first scan didn’t show any fractures but a secondary look revealed the broken jaw. Now he will have to sit on the sidelines while waiting fo the injury to heal before he can be cleared to compete again in 2020.
As it turns out, Usman faces a similar suspension after the commission required him to have an X-ray done on his left thumb and if it returns positive he must be cleared by an orthopedic doctor or he could also be suspended until June 12, 2020. Early in the fight, Usman appeared to favor his left hand following a punch that connected on Covington, although he continued to use his hand for the rest of the contest without any major issue.
New UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski joins Usman and Covington on the list of athletes looking at a potential six-month suspension following his win over Max Holloway. Volkanovski much have his right hand scanned, and if that comes back positive, he has to gain clearance from an orthopedic doctor or he’ll be sitting out until June 12, 2020 as well.
