As 2019 draws to a close, CR looks back at our top 19 stories from the past calendar year.

The emergence of the brassiere dates all the way back to the 14th century B.C., but it wasn't until the 1800s when girdles, corsets, and bras became associated with changing popular perceptions of the female body.

The anti-bra movement began as a retaliation against feminine norms, coinciding with the second wave of feminism during the 1960s. The Miss America Pageant in 1968 drew protestors, who criticized the competition for valuing women's bodies over their brains. Although no bras were burned at the demonstration, feminine products were discarded into a "Freedom Trash Can" to reject typical conventions of beauty. In honor of No Bra Day today, in which women are encouraged to go braless in order to encourage breast cancer awareness, CR looks back on the history of the no-bra movement through the decades.
