Freezing drizzle overnight transitions to more snow Monday afternoon.

ST. LOUIS — Round one of winter weather has blanketed parts of the St. Louis region with more than four inches of snow. Bands of moderate to heavy snow moved through the area Sunday afternoon bringing traffic to a crawl and leaving two to four inches of snow across most of the metro St. Louis area.

Farther south, a bit of sleet and freezing rain has been reported. Overall precipitation has been much lighter to the south.

While the initial wave of winter weather has moved on to the northeast leaving freezing drizzle to linger through the overnight hours. Roads remain slick, especially side roads, bridges and overpasses. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing overnight in the mid to upper 20s.

As the energy pulls out of the Rockies overnight into Monday morning, another wave of wintry mix and snow is expected to develop around midday into the afternoon bringing an additional two to four inches of snow to the metro area. For many, storm total snow accumulation could be in excess of six inches.

Travel Monday afternoon is expected to be challenging, especially if snowfall rates in the heavier bands approach an inch an hour similar to what we saw Sunday afternoon.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for the St. Louis area with winter weather advisories farther south.

South of St. Louis, warmer air being drawn in from the south may result in a tenth of an inch of icy glaze accumulating. While snowfall totals farther south will be much lower and in some cases, nearly negligible, roads could still be slick. Elevated surfaces will be more prone to glaze over.

The weather system will finally push away from the region Monday night. Temperatures will then remain below freezing until Tuesday afternoon. Sunshine will return on Tuesday to help melt some of the snow and ice even through temperatures will be below freezing for much of the day.
