Heavy snow could mix with sleet and rain to make the drive home Sunday night treacherous in Upstate New York. This map shows estimated snowfall through 7 a.m. Monday; more could fall after that.
Syracuse, N.Y. -- Confidence is growing in a winter storm that could make the roads hazardous in Upstate New York for the return home from Thanksgiving travel and for the Monday morning drive to work.
The storm is expected to come in two parts: snow Sunday morning turning into a messy mix of rain and snow as temperatures warm in the afternoon, and then a potentially heavy snow storm coming after dark Sunday and continuing into Monday.
“A strong winter system will likely impact the region late this weekend, with accumulating snow Sunday morning transitioning to a wintry mix later Sunday, and then back to snow by Monday,” said the National Weather Service in issuing a hazardous weather outlook for most of Upstate New York. “Significant snow accumulations with icing are possible.”
The storm will be moving up the East Coast, so it’s expected to hit Central and eastern New York harder than Western New York. Buffalo is expected to get an inch or less, while the Mohawk Valley could get up to 8 inches through Monday morning. If more of the precipitation comes as snow and less as rain than now forecast, up to 10 inches of snow could blanket eastern New York.
“Snow covered roads and reduced visibilities with hazardous travel (are expected) Sunday and Sunday night,” the National Weather Service in Albany said. “Additional snowfall is expected Monday.”
The storm is still developing, so there are many details still to be ironed out. The weather service urges travelers to monitor the forecast and adjust plans if necessary.
