Former Arkansas state senator Linda Collins-Smith was found shot dead in her home, and authorities are treating her death as a homicide, according to reports.
The 57-year-old Republican former senator was found late Tuesday, up to two days after her neighbors in Pocahontas say they heard gunshots, according to KATV.
The body was wrapped in a blanket and had already decomposed, slowing down official identification, the Arkansas Times reported.
“I am shocked and in tears. That’s my friend, Linda has always been there for me! I’m speechless,” her former press secretary, Ken Yang, wrote on Twitter, confirming that “reports say it appears to be murder.”
The Arkansas GOP also tweeted about the “untimely death” of the politician who left the Senate after losing in this year’s midterms.
“She was a passionate voice for her people and a close member of our Republican family. We are praying for her loved ones during this difficult time.”
Collins-Smith — who reportedly divorced retired Circuit Judge Philip Smith last year — had been a Democrat before switching to the Republican Party in 2011 during her first term in the Arkansas House.
“To so many of us, Senator Linda Collins-Smith was more than just a colleague,” the Democratic Party of Arkansas wrote on Twitter.
“She was a friend and warm person. We are stunned and saddened to hear of her death. Please join us in prayer as we remember her family and her loved ones.”
