Martin Scorsese clarifies criticism of Marvel movies but refuses to back down
2019-11-05 08:49:52
It may feel like we’ve been hearing about this for years, but it was only a month ago that Martin Scorsese shocked the world by declaring that he wasn’t especially interested in Marvel movies, saying they were more like theme park rides than proper cinema. Based on the sheer volume of the backlash, though, you would’ve thought his totally fine opinion—which has absolutely no impact on anyone’s life whatsoever—had somehow killed the beloved childhood dog of literally everyone on the planet. Everyone got mad (because whether or not people like Marvel movies is the most important issue of our time) and then, mercifully, it all seemed to die down. Until tonight. For some inexplicable reason, Scorsese has decided to resurrect this certified Dumb Controversy in the New York Times op-ed section (also home to the most highly regarded pieces about the benefits of coddling fascists) with an essay featuring the catchy title “I Said Marvel Movies Aren’t Cinema. Let Me Explain.” And explain he does! The crux of the piece is that Scorsese wants to clarify that he doesn’t hate Marvel movies and that he doesn’t intend to insult them or the people who like them, he just doesn’t like them because he doesn’t think they live up to the high standards of the art form that he loves so much.

Sean Spicer's success on 'DWTS' is frustrating judges and viewers
2019-11-05 08:26:11
Sean Spicer’s continued success on Dancing With the Stars is beginning to frustrate viewers. Despite consistently low scores for his dancing from the judges, Spicer has remained on the show because of his relationship with President Trump. Since the beginning of the season, Spicer has run his appearance on the show like a political campaign. In fact, he has received multiple endorsements from his former employer, President Trump. Trump has helped bolster Spicer’s viewer votes immensely. Spicer has either had the lowest or second lowest score in all but one dance competition this season, but because he receives so many votes from the public he has yet to be even considered for elimination. While popularity has always been an important aspect of the game, it has primarily been about dancing. This is the first time a large group of voters, who don’t necessarily watch the show, are entering the voter pool and it’s frustrating long time fans. The judges are also becoming more and more frustrated by Spicer’s continued success, and it’s showing in their critiques. After Spicer’s performance tonight, head judge Len Goodman said, “We keep throwing you out the boat, and the viewers keep throwing you a life preserver.” And since the theme of Spicer’s dance was nautical, he added, “Your feet, well, the mermaid had better feet than you.” Judge Bruno Tonioli also blasted Spicer’s dance, saying “I think Dory in Finding Nemo has a better sense of direction.” Spicer and his substitute dance partner Jenna Johnson were the first couple announced as safe for the night. The two contestants up for elimination were Kate Flannery and Ally Brooke - who happens to have the highest combined score of the season. Before eliminating Flannery, judge Carrie Ann Inaba vented over the fact the worst dancer was not up for elimination. “It's confusing for me at this point why these are the bottom two,” said Inaba “I'm confused and a little irritated.”
